General Overview:
Learn to care, feed, and observe all of the animals in your care as well as assist the current staff. Interns will work with numerous native, exotic, and domestic species.

Qualifications:
Pursuit of a degree in captive wildlife, animal husbandry, animal science, zoology, biology or other related field that requires the education, training or experience of the animal care intern position.

Work Hours:
Start date: ASAP May, after finals are completed, through Labor Day
6:30am- 5:15pm 3-4 days per week, including every other weekend and holidays.

The internship is for the entire summer season which runs from the first weekend in May through Labor Day.
Additional September hours may be available and discussed.

Requirements:
Our ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual that has excellent communication skills, a hard work ethic, a passion and knowledge of animals, and a commitment to the entire summer season. This individual must be able to lift over 50lbs., have proof of tetanus vaccine, and a valid driver’s license.

*Please note: Although internship credits may be completed prior to the end of the season, we do require our interns to commit and complete the full summer season through Labor Day.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance to animal enclosures and service areas to ensure they are clean, secure and compliant with state and federal regulations.

  • Daily animal feedings.

  • Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory of animal feed and care supplies.

  • Perform general and preventative maintenance work on zoo grounds.

  • Enrichment development and implementation.

  • Monitor and observe animals for illness, unusual behavior, etc.

  • Active and effective communication between all staff and guests.

  • Night feedings for nursery neonates as long as needed.

  • Participate in on-site veterinary calls.

  • Tag and vaccinate white -tailed fawns.

  • Educate the public through daily “Keeper Talks.”

We will be conducting interviews until all positions are filled. On-site housing is included as well as a bi-weekly stipend of $400.
